I don’t think there can be many things more embarrassing in the world than stage dooring someone who speaks a different language to you. Actually, there can… When it’s Pia the goddess Douwes. Excuse me, I’m going to curl up and literally cry with embarrassment.
Sometimes I feel like the theatre community has forgotten Gertrude Lawrence. It makes me sad, because she is fabulous.
Have only just come across Gertrude Lawrence…but hopefully seeing something at the Aldwych mid-May, and all I can think of is “I’m going to be in the theatre where Gertrude Lawrence performed in Daphne du Maurier’s September Tide”
So, we’ve not all forgotten…even if we’re only just getting to know her. (That was unintentional. I should delete that, but it’s amused me)
Well, she had been asked to play Elphaba but she thought that she was too old for the role :)
Pia can play a fifteen year old perfectly. She can do Elphaba!
Pia turned it down!? Pia, NOOOOOOOOOO!
Yeah I would have loved to see her playing it, but she only sang it on the Best of Musical concerts 2007 :) I think there are a few pictures of her as Elphie…
I can understand why she did, but I think it’s up to the audience to forget her age and pretend she’s younger. That’s what theatre’s all about - willing suspension of disbelief. I’d have loved to have seen her do it at the BOM concerts…I’ll have to have a look for photos :)
